Life in Chokobo .... .... can be a little tough. The villagers are farmers whose survival depends on their ability to obtain a good price for their crops at market. This is not a simple matter. The community lies 7k from the nearest main road and the only access is via an unmade road. The only means of transportation is an old Landrover which serves the farmers in Chokobo and two neighbouring communities. If the rains fail, there is incredible hardship. If the farmer gets sick, there is huge pressure on his family to take his place.
This stream is the only source of free drinking water for the Chokobo people. Even from this picture you can see the dubious quality of the water but if we tell you that the nomadic tribesmen allow their cattle to paddle, drink and defecate wherever they wish, you will probably not want to drink this particular water! A supportive church in Jos held a special offering to raise funds for the community and we contributed the rest of the required money. Our team first surveyed the area and identified potential sites for the borehole, before agreeing the final location with the WASCOM. Then Rocky was rolled into action and the borehole was drilled and topped off with a durable handpump.
TASTE is constantly seeking to help communities like the one at Chokobo. But we are limited in our response by our funds. If you would like to help a community, you can donate online now, or you can talk with us and we can help you organise some fundraising where you live and work.
Another case study? We can tell you about a solar system in Jemkur. |
